Chapter 24

“Go on in and have a seat,” Jefferson held open the door to the interrogation room for Bryce Wessler and his lawyer, Dan Dansbury.

“You hauled in Bryce Wessler? Are you crazy, Pierce?” Clyde looked up from his desk and scoffed. “Chief’s gonna cut off your family jewels and hand them to you.”

“Whatever man,” Jefferson spat back. “Just make sure we’re not disturbed. “

“It’s your funeral,” said Clyde returning to his reports.

Jefferson went into the interrogation room and firmly shut the door behind him.

“Perhaps you can tell us why you dragged my client in here,” Dansbury said impatiently.

“I am investigating your client for the murder of Delmar LaCrosse.”

“You can’t be serious!” Wessler exclaimed. “Based on what?”

“We’ll sue this station for false arrest!” Dansbury bellowed.

“Mr. Wessler, you are connected to the last project that Mr. LaCrosse was working on,” Jefferson answered. “And you are not under arrest yet. I just need you to answer a few questions.”

“What kind of questions?” Dansbury demanded to know.

“It’s okay, Dan,” Bryce told his lawyer. “Detective Pierce thinks dragging me in here makes him feel like he’s doing something towards solving this case. I’ll play along and answer his questions.”

“Are you sure?”

“It’s fine. I’ve got nothing to hide.”

“How did you know Mr. LaCrosse?” Jefferson asked with his pen poised over the legal pad he’d brought in for note-taking.

“We met occasionally at the town council meetings.”

“And you had business with the council?”

“Obviously.”

“What kind of business?”

“I had a few rezonings that I needed approved.”

“When you say ‘a few,’ how many is that exactly –?”

“Really!” interrupted Mr. Dansbury impatiently. “Is that relevant?”

“Yes. So how many rezonings, Mr. Wessler?” Jefferson repeated the question.

“Fifteen,” answered Bryce Wessler.

“Fifteen?”

“Yes. One five. Fifteen.”

Jefferson wrote it down and asked, “So how many of the fifteen did Mr. LaCrosse recommend for approval?”

“Approximately six.”

“Did he give a reason for the ones he disapproved?”

“Does it make a difference?” Wessler asked.

“Yes.”

“Do I have to answer?” Wessler asked his attorney.

“No you most certainly do not,” Dansbury stated firmly.

“That’s okay,” said Jefferson and he tossed a file on the table in front of Wessler.

“What’s this?” asked Wessler opening the file.

“They are articles from the Oak Grove Gazette written about the rezonings,” Jefferson answered smugly. “According to the articles, the reason Mr. LaCrosse did not approve the majority of the rezonings is that it didn’t fit into the land uses outlined for the future.”

“So? What are you trying to say?”

“I’m just saying that I’m confused as to why you wanted to hide that fact, especially since the council passed the rezonings anyway. Except for the last one Delmar brought before council.”

“What’s your point?” Mr. Dansbury asked.

“I’m just wondering why all these rezonings had been passed in spite of being recommended for disapproval by Mr. LaCrosse, but this last one, a residential subdivision that calls for four homes to the acre, was not approved.”

“How would I know that?” Bryce shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“Well according to this article, the survey of how much of these 200 acres you actually owned was in question.”
